Amazing Grace is probably the most well-known hymn of all time, and the story of its authorship is as powerful as its lyrics. The author, John Newton, spent several years as a slave master before he was moved to wholeheartedly devote his life to God. Eventually ordained as an Anglican priest, he later fought alongside Wilberforce to abolish the slave trade. His own personal transformation is clearly evident in the hymn's description of lost to found and blindness to sight. How sweet the sound!
The amazing grace that brought new life to a previous slave trader is the same grace available to us.
